Abstract

This book aims to encourage an awareness of sustainability as it is implemented across all areas of planning and design, and the ability to think and act on this knowledge. The conditions that inspire a design, and the factors that influence the planning and building of it, should be challenged. This book will explore in genuine depth the sustainable strategies that could be applied, along with the practical work of key figures in the built environment, setting these against historical experiences and traditional cultures. It also aims to revive the discourse around these subjects, and to look at possible architectural interventions, responses and approaches, based on inspirational and exemplary case studies. Achieving this will require the involvement of structural engineers, energy and environmental engineers, innovative designers, construction businesses and specialists, research institutes and universities. The five chapters and more than 300 showcased projects reflect important stages in the architectural and engineering-based design process, stages which cannot be sidestepped, and need to be addressed when dealing with sustainable strategies in the built environment. All fields or design constraints are constantly changing and demand a clear approach to current and future issues.

Abstract

When searching for genuinely sustainable building design and technology - designs that go beyond conventional sustainability to be truly restorative - we often find that nature got there first. Over 3.5 billion years of natural history have evolved innumerable examples of forms, systems, and processes that can be applied to modern green design. Aimed at architects, urban designers and product designers, this new edition of 'Biomimicry in Architecture' looks to the natural world to achieve radical increases in resource efficiency. Packed with case studies predicting future trends, this edition also contains updated and expanded chapters on structures, materials, waste, water, thermal control and energy, as well as an all-new chapter on light. An amazing sourcebook of extraordinary design solutions, Biomimicry in Architecture is a must-read for anyone preparing for the challenges of building a sustainable and restorative future.

Abstract

What makes building materials sustainable? How can we reduce how much "grey energy" is produced in the building process? And how does a Life Cycle Analysis work? These are questions which are becoming increasingly more common in the context of sustainable construction. The DETAIL Green Book Sustainable construction techniques offers a thorough guide to ecological building design and sustainable construction methods, which will be particularly valuable for architects. The authors provide an overview of the most relevant databases and certification standards for building products and illustrate how a Life Cycle Analysis is conducted. They also identify key ways of optimising the planning process in line with ecological criteria, while offering advice for the selection of building materials and elements. Detailed documentation from five buildings constructed in Europe and North America serve to illustrate the associated assessment processes in this book.

Abstract

Summary: Energy is everything - and we are used to this in the means of energy reduction for our buildings: climate design and climate engineering is nowadays standard in the design process. The more successful we are in this, the less energy we need to run the building during its useful life (which is good) and we can focus instead on an additional aspect: the embodied energy - the energy we need for the material production and construction process. Interestingly, the reduction in energy used in a climate-efficient building during its lifetime is equal to the energy consumption necessary to produce and install the building. This aspect triggers us to reconsider the design potentials of focusing on less energy in the construction.

Abstract

Since its launch in 1993 by the nonprofit U.S. Green Building Council, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program has become the standard measure of sustainability for buildings worldwide. Successfully reaching one of four LEED certification levels-Certified, Silver, Gold, or Platinum-requires specific point totals, which differ among building types. Getting certified, in addition to altruistic benefits, allows building owners to take advantage of a growing number of state and local government incentives. The menu of potential points available for various practices ranges from installing bike racks on-site to documenting the source of the iron ore used in anyconstruction steel. As any architect or developer can attest, navigating this complex system of required prerequisites and credits can be maddening. It may be good to be green, but it's still far from easy. An architect's knowledge of materials can make or break a building's rating. Though LEED's performance-based criteriaexclude individual materials and products from earning points toward certification, their specific use can. Apply a material in the wrong situation and you may not get credit for it. Fortunately, with a little insider knowledge, you can also use one material to get credit in two, three, or even more areas. LEED Materials is packed with critical information on nearly two hundred materials, products, and services. Organized in the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) MasterFormat-industry standard in building contracts-this highly visual guide makes sure your material choices and uses will maximize your LEED credits. LEED Materials includes a foreword by Steven Winter, former chairman of the U.S. Green Building Council.

Abstract

Studio Mumbai is a human infrastructure of skilled craftsmen and architects who design and build the work directly. Gathered through time, this group shares an environment created from an iterative process, where ideas are explored through the production of large-scale mock-ups, models, material studies, sketches and drawings. Projects are developed through careful consideration of place and a practice that draws from traditional skills, local building techniques, materials and an ingenuity arising from limited resources. The practice was started in 1995 by Bijoy Jain. Projects include the Studio Mumbai Work-Place in Nagaon, the Casa Tara in Kashid, the Leti 360 Resort in Leti, the Palmyra House in Nandgaon. Excerpts from a dialogue between Dr. Balkrishna V. Doshi and Bijoy Jain and an essay by Peter Wilson.

Abstract

Green Buildings Pay examines, through case studies of commercial and university buildings, how different approaches to green design can produce more sustainable patterns of development. The case studies are described by their designers and often also by the client, thereby ensuring that the buildings are seen in the context of market realities.
